The Lunar map is also revealing secrets about the Moon’s interior — and hinting about Mars’s interior as well. The surface can tell us a lot about what’s happening inside the Moon, but until now mapping has been very limited. For instance, with this new high-resolution map, we can confirm that there is very little water on the Moon today, even deep in the interior.
Using the laser altimeter (LALT) instrument on board the Japanese Selenological and Engineering Explorer (SELENE) satellite, the researchers mapped the Moon at an unprecedented 15-kilometer resolution.
The map is the first to cover the Moon from pole to pole, with detailed measures of surface topography, on the dark side of the moon as well as the near side. The highest point — on the rim of the Dririchlet-Jackson basin near the equator — rises 11 kilometers (more than 6.5 miles) high, while the lowest point — the bottom of Antoniadi crater near the south pole rests 9 kilometers deep.
If water flowed beneath the lunar surface, the crust would be somewhat flexible, but it wasn’t. The surface was too rigid to allow for any liquid water, even deep within the Moon.Earth’s surface is more flexible, by contrast, with the surface rising or falling as water flows above or below ground. Even our planet’s plate tectonics is due in part to water lubricating the crust.
The LALT map is the most detailed lunar map ever created. The last three Apollo missions mapped part of the surface in the early 1970s, and the 1994 Clementine mission in offered a resolution between 20-60 kilometers in certain locations, but not the entire surface.

Scientists have convinced that Water existed on Mars, atleast in it’s history. So considering the fact that water acts as the only source for many lives, provokes us with a thought whether Life exists on Mars?
Lets move deep into this topic and explore…
What is less known is how much water occupied the red planet and what happened to it during its geological march to the present. Mostly, evidence has pointed to a period when clay-rich minerals were formed by water, followed by a drier time, when salt-rich, acidic water affected much of the planet. Assuming that happened, the thinking goes, it would have been difficult for life, if it did exist, to have survived and for scientists to find traces of it.
Now a research team has provided a evidence for the presence of carbonates on Mars that shows that Mars could have been the home for watery environments in the past. The red planet close to the earth is neither too hot nor too cold. At the same time it is not too acidic. So it’s just the right place.
Finding carbonates indicates that Mars had neutral to alkaline waters when the minerals formed in the mid-latitude region more than 3.6 billion years ago. Carbonates dissolve quickly in acid, therefore their survival challenges suggest that an exclusively acidic environment later cloaked the planet. This could open up a range of environment on Mars.
So the researchers say that the presence of carbonate mineral bolsters chances of environment on Mars.

A new phone based on Google’s operating system Android has been unveiled by Vodafone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The touchscreen HTC Magic will feature a 3.2 Megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, and GPS, but no slide-out keyboard.
The first “Google phone”, called the G1, was launched in September by HTC and is exclusive to T-mobile.The Magic will feature new Android firmware, known as “Cupcake”, with changes based on G1 user suggestions. The Magic will go on sale to Vodafone customers in the UK, Germany, Spain and France, and non-exclusively in Italy.
If the device hits an anticipated price point of between 99 and 199 euros, it would be pitched at the broader phone market. With that range of prices, it’s not aimed at the same audience as, say, the iPhone, it’s looking more at a broader appeal for people.
The HTC Magic has a proprietary headphone jack, and so will not accept many standard headphones. The device comes pre-loaded with Google applications, such as Maps, Mail, Search and You Tube.

The cool Continent Antartica is warming more than expected. Scientists studying climate change have long believed that while most of the rest of the globe has been getting steadily warmer, a large part of Antarctica – the East Antarctic Ice Sheet – has actually been getting colder.
But new research shows that for the last 50 years, much of Antarctica has been warming at a rate comparable to the rest of the world. In fact, the warming in West Antarctica is greater than the cooling in East Antarctica, meaning that on average the continent has got more warmeThe scientists found temperature measurements from weather stations corresponded closely with satellite data for overlapping time periods. That allowed them to use the satellite data as a guide to deduce temperatures in areas of the continent without weather stations.
A major reason most of Antarctica was thought to be cooling is because of a hole in the Earth’s protective ozone layer that appears during the spring months in the Southern Hemisphere’s polar region. In any case, efforts to repair the ozone layer eventually will begin taking effect and the hole could be eliminated by the middle of this century. If that happens, all of Antarctica could begin warming on a par with the rest of the world.

If the moon Europa is tilted on its axis even slightly as it orbits the giant planet Jupiter, then Jupiter’s gravitational pull could be creating powerful waves in Europa’s ocean. As those waves dissipate, they would give off significant heat energy.
Depending on the amount of tilt, the heat generated by the ocean flow could be 100 to thousands of times greater than the heat generated by the flexing of Europa’s rocky core in response to gravitational pull from Jupiter and the other moons circling that planet.
The current assumption is that oceans on moons are heated mainly by this flexing of their cores. In the case of Europa, it also has been thought that the thick ice covering its ocean probably generates some heat as two sides of cracked ice rub together in response to gravitational pull.
These factors are important considerations if exploratory missions are ever sent to Europa in search of life. Europa, which is slightly smaller than Earth’s moon, is one of Jupiter’s 63 moons. With surface temperatures as cold as minus 260 degrees Fahrenheit, Europa’s surface is covered with a thick layer of ice. There is evidence of a liquid ocean beneath the ice and, if there is volcanic activity on the sea floor, this could be a recipe for generating microorganisms that live without sunlight, perhaps like the microorganisms found at hydrothermal vents and other places on Earth.
Many planets and moons are known to be tilted within their orbital plane. The Earth, for example, has an axial tilt of about 23 degrees. It’s why the northern and southern hemispheres have different seasons, depending on whether they are tilted more toward or away from the sun.
Previous theoretical calculations expected Europa to have an axial tilt of at least 0.1 degrees. It hasn’t been measured and could be bigger than this. But even at this minimum value the tidal flow on Europa using Tyler’s new calculation is quite strong – some 10 centimeters a second – and enough to cause significant heating.
The new calculation differs from previous ones in that it allows a more realistic dynamic response of the ocean to the tidal forces. His assumptions and calculations led him to say that he thinks this kind of wave action could be the dominant heat source in the oceans of Europa and other moons.
